Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy — KAP

At Discreet Ketamine, my purpose is to help patients move beyond surviving and into a life that feels worth living. Ketamine has the ability to rapidly relieve symptoms of depression, anxiety, PTSD, and emotional overwhelm. When this power is paired with skilled therapeutic guidance, the results often extend far beyond symptom reduction. This combined approach is called Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy, or KAP.

KAP allows psychotherapy to take place while the brain is in a more flexible and open state. Ketamine softens defenses and loosens the grip of negative thought patterns. Insights that once felt unreachable become clear. Emotions that were too painful to face can be processed safely and with courage. With a trained therapist present, patients can use this experience to build new meaning and healthier responses to life’s challenges.

Preparation

A typical KAP session begins with preparation. The patient and therapist meet to discuss intentions, recent stressors, goals for healing, and what the patient hopes to understand about themselves. This conversation sets a supportive foundation so that the ketamine experience becomes guided and purposeful.

KAP Session

The KAP Session

When the medication is administered, the patient settles into a calm environment. Many choose to wear an eye mask and listen to gentle music to support comfort and inner focus. The therapist remains present throughout the experience. Sometimes the therapist sits quietly and allows the inner process to unfold. At other moments the therapist may offer supportive words or grounding strategies. The goal is to help the patient feel safe, curious, and open. Sessions typically last between ninety minutes and two hours.

As the medicine begins to fade, the therapist continues to stay with the patient and invites conversation about what they noticed, felt, or understood. Speaking about the experience in this moment helps transform insights into memories that will be accessible later. Patients often describe these early discussions as some of the most meaningful moments of therapy they have ever had.

Integration

The next part of treatment is called integration. Within a few days of each dosing session, the patient and therapist meet again while fully alert. The focus of integration is to turn the emotional and cognitive breakthroughs from the ketamine session into real change in daily life. This may include practicing new coping strategies, updating self beliefs, repairing relationships, and reinforcing a healthier sense of identity.

Most patients benefit from a series of sessions rather than a single experience. A common course includes several weeks of carefully timed dosing and integration so that progress continues to build. Treatment plans are individualized according to symptoms, history, goals, and response.

Setting and Support

Patients in my practice can choose supervised sessions in a clinic or in their own homes through secure telehealth. A therapist remains connected through audio and video and ensures that the patient never goes through the experience alone. I provide the medical oversight, prescribing the correct dose, monitoring treatment effects, and staying in close communication with the therapist. This approach offers the comfort of familiar surroundings with professional care closely involved from beginning to end. Many patients feel safer, more able to relax, and more willing to explore their inner experience in their own home.

Throughout the entire process, I collaborate directly with each patient’s KAP therapist. We communicate regularly, adjust the plan when needed, and ensure that medical care and psychotherapy are working together to support the patient’s wellbeing. This partnership creates a circle of care that continues even after ketamine treatment is completed.

Moving Forward

Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy offers a way to reconnect with reality in a healthier, more hopeful way. It allows patients to rediscover who they are beneath the weight of trauma, illness, and self judgment. When guided with intention and compassion, this treatment can offer not only relief but also renewal.

If you believe that healing should lead to growth and not simply a temporary break from pain, KAP may be a powerful option for you. I am here to walk you through each step and help you decide if this approach fits your needs.
